The Biblical character of Jezebel is a figure associated with betrayal and of false prophets. This character was initially a Phoenician (what is now called Lebanon) princess and worshipped the nature based god Baal who lives in Hell for some parts of the year. She later became a queen of Israel who was married off to King Ahab in a political marriage. She controlled her husband to turn his back on his worship of the god Yahweh and to instead worship the nature god Baal. She punished those who believed in Yahweh or were prophets of Yahweh. To counter the worship of Yahweh, she brought with her 800 prophets for Baal. When the queen brought the prophets of Baal, the Jewish prophet Elijah foretold that a great famine and draught would come over Israel. In the story Elijah's prophecy came true. She committed other acts of evil to control those around her, such as creating false evidence that an innocent man who owned land that the king wanted committed a crime. They sentenced him to death by stoning. The prophet Elijah condemned the death of the landowner and prophesized that King Ahab and his family would all be eaten by dogs. The people and the court of Israel literally overthrew her control by throwing her from her balcony. Dogs tore her corpse apart and ate her remains. Her story is recorded in the Book of Kings in the Hebrew bible.
The Meaning Behind the Name The name of the former queen of Israel means: "Where is the prince?". The question is meant as a cry to Baal when he was believed to be in Hell.
The Modern Day Usage of the Term
The biblical story of Jezebel still influences pop culture of today. The term is nowadays used to as a derogatory term to refer to a woman of loose morals or of a corrupting or controlling nature.
